How to Calculate the True Value of Credit Card Rewards

Understanding what your rewards are worth is the key to maximizing value. Here is how to calculate the true value of every point and mile.

Cash Back: The Easy One

Cash back is straightforward: 1% = 1 cent per dollar spent. A 2% cash back card earns 2 cents per dollar.

Annual value formula:

Annual Spending x Cash Back Rate = Annual Cash Back

Example: $36,000/year x 2% = $720 in cash back

Points and Miles: It Depends on Redemption

Travel points vary in value based on how you redeem them:

Redemption MethodTypical Value per Point
[Statement credit](/glossary#statement-credit "Statement Credit - Glossary Definition")0.5-1.0 cents
Gift cards0.5-1.0 cents
Travel portal1.0-1.5 cents
Transfer to partners1.5-5.0+ cents

Calculating Point Values

Formula: Value per Point = Cost of Flight or Hotel / Points Required

Example: A business class flight costs $3,000 or 60,000 Hyatt points.

Value per point = $3,000 / 60,000 = 5 cents per point

Real-World Examples

Chase Ultimate Rewards:

  • Cash back: 1 cent/point
  • Chase Travel portal: 1.25-1.5 cents/point
  • Transfer to Hyatt: 2-5 cents/point
  • Our valuation: 2 cents/point

Amex Membership Rewards:

  • Cash back: 0.6 cents/point
  • Amex Travel: 1 cent/point
  • Transfer to ANA/Singapore: 2-5 cents/point
  • Our valuation: 1.8 cents/point

Capital One Miles:

  • Statement credit: 0.5 cents/mile
  • Capital One Travel: 1 cent/mile
  • Transfer to partners: 1-2 cents/mile
  • Our valuation: 1.5 cents/mile

The Annual Fee Equation

Is a card with an annual fee worth it?

Net Value = (Annual Rewards Earned + Benefits Used) - Annual Fee

Example: Chase Sapphire Reserve

  • Rewards on $3,000/mo spend: ~50,000 points = $1,000 value
  • $300 travel credit: used in full
  • Priority Pass lounge access: ~$300 value
  • Total value: $1,600
  • Annual fee: $550
  • Net value: $1,050

Tips for Maximum Value

  1. Never redeem for gift cards - This almost always gives the worst rate
  2. Use transfer partners for big trips - The premium cabin sweet spot
  3. Stack category bonuses - Use the right card for each purchase type
  4. Watch for transfer bonuses - Issuers occasionally offer 20-40% bonus points when transferring

The Bottom Line

Know your points' value before choosing a strategy. If you will not use transfer partners, a simple 2% cash back card may actually beat a travel card for you.
